Gardaí in County Cork are investigating the circumstances surrounding a road accident in which a 33-year-old Clare man was killed.

Cathal Torpey from Tulla had been in Cork for a wedding when he was struck by a car on the Cork side of Castlemartyr at 5.15am on Monday morning. He died a short time later at Cork University Hospital. The female driver of the car was uninjured.

The NUI Galway civil engineering graduate returned home from New Zealand in February 2015 where he had been based in Christchurch since 2011. Previous to that, Mr. Torpey worked on a number of construction projects in Ireland.

Mr. Torpey was the only son of Margaret and the late Martin ‘Mar’ Torpey.

An Garda Síochána are appealing to witnesses to Monday morning’s fatal incident to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 4621550, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
