Oliver Fitzpatrick reviews the weekend’s local soccer action in Clare.

Prego Menswear Clare Cup 1/4 Final
Bridge Utd A 3-1 Moher Celtic
A strong start to the game where Bridge Utd scored 3 early goals helped the home side to advance to the semi-final with a good victory over Moher Celtic at Sixmilebridge on Sunday. Mark Culbert opened the scoring in the first minute. Anton Mannering made it 2-0 on 5 minutes. Darragh Fitzgerald got in on the scoring on 25 minutes to make it 3-0. Johnny Daly pulled a goal back for Moher on 50 minutes but it was not enough to stop Bridge Utd advancing to the next round.

Bridge Utd:
Kevin Kelly, Jason Whyte, Darren Murphy, Eoin Guinan, Jonathan Downes, Pa McMahon, Anton Mannering, Mikey McNamara, Darragh Fitzgerald, Eric Carr, Mark Culbert Subs: Kieren Quinlan for Culbert, Derek Fahy for Carr, Christy Carey for McNamara, Barry Downes for Whyte

Avenue United B 0-2 Mountshannon Celtic
Mountshannon showed their pedigree in defeating the First Division league leaders in Roslevan by a two goal margin. The visitors began showing strong early intent with Niall Minogue testing the Avenue goalkeeper from 12 yards. The hosts’ net seemed in less imminent danger when Michael Barrett gathered possession on the centre circle. However, the midfielder weaved his way past three Avenue players before rifling into the far corner from the edge of the area. After the interval, the visitors carved out a more direct but equally effective route to goal when Paul Dooley flicked a goal kick into the path of William Glass. After gathering his composure, the striker struck across the goalkeeper who got a hand to the shot. The effort managed to find the back of the net and double the visitors advantage. Avenue managed to forge a few openings in their effort to halve the deficit, most notably a low effort which was directed narrowly right of Colm Kavanagh’s goalpost. Their efforts were in vain, however, and they were fortunate not to concede a third. As they committed more men forward, they left space and William Glass may have doubled his personal tally had he directed a powerful effort either side of the home goalkeeper. Mountshannon emerged as worthy victors in a dominant display and claimed three vital points before their crucial midweek clash against Kilkishen Celtic.

Mountshannon Celtic: Colm Kavanagh, Andrew McNamara, Michael Scanlan, Martin McNamara, John Scanlan, Niall Minogue, Cathal Moloney, Michael Barrett, Tomas McNamara, William Glass, Paul Dooley. Subs: John O’Brien for Tomas McNamara, Liam Corry for Niall Minogue

Turnpike Rovers 2-4 Connolly Celtic
Connolly Celtic kept up their challenge for the First Division Title with a good performance to defeat Turnpike Rovers at Lees Road on Sunday. Connolly went into an early 2 goal lead before Turnpike got back in it before half time. Connolly upped the gears again and 2 more goals had the points well wrapped up before Turnpike scored a late consolation goal. Eoin Fitzgerald scored twice for Connolly with Jason Devitt and Ken Kennedy also getting in on the scoring. Jason Hayes and Niall McMahon scored for Turnpike.

Bunratty Cratloe 5-0 Manus Celtic
Bunratty Cratloe kept up their recent good form with an impressive performance and victory over Manus Celtic at Bunratty on Sunday. Star performer for the home side was Raj Singh who banged in 4 goals with Shane Browne completing the scoring.

Suttons Lighting Third Division
Corofin Harps B 4-2 Bridge Utd B
Mikey Whyte scored 2 goals for Bridge Utd but it was not enough to stop the home side claiming the 3 points on the day.

Bridge Utd B: Barry Deasy, Dan Larkin, Billy Maxwell, Carhal Kinnane, Trevor Maxwell, Jamie O’Gorman, Aidan Whelan, Maxi , Eoin Gough, John Keogh, Mikey Whyte Subs: Johnny Fawl for Hayes, Noel Duggan for Keogh, Pa Collins for Whyte
