Dessie Ellis TD, will be the main speaker at the Annual Clare Sinn Féin County Easter Commemoration, this year to the Republican plot in the cemetery at Drumcliffe, Ennis, on Easter Sunday at 2pm.
The saddest and most futile bloodletting in the Irish Civil War came at the end in Clare with the last three executions being carried out in the County.
Patrick O’Mahony (25) was executed in Ennis Jail on 26 April, and while it had been hoped that this total of seventy five by the Free State government in six short months, would mark the end of the nightmare. It was not to be.
On May 2, Chris Quinn and William Shaughnessy both aged 18, were also shot in Ennis, bringing the total to seventy seven – two days after the formal cease-fire had been announced by General Aiken and brought into operation on 31 April, 1923.
