Fine Gael members from across County Clare gathered at the Auburn Lodge Hotel at the weekend with the countdown to the next General Election already well underway.

Guest Chairperson for the night was Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly, while Pat Breen TD, Joe Carey TD, Senator Martin Conway, Senator Tony Mulcahy and Mayor of Clare John Crowe were also in attendence.

Elected on the night were; Chairperson, Geraldine Gregan; Vice Chairperson, Michael Carey; Secretary, Trudy Leyden; Joint Treasurers Gerry Flynn and Noel Howard; Assistant Secretary, Joseph Melody;  Policy Officer, Martina Haugh; Membership Officer, Ger O’Halloran; Equality officer, Leonora Carey, Agricultural and Rural Development Representatives: Dan McInerney, Dick Pilkington, Luke Hogg. Ratified by the Fine Gael Executive Council were Constituency Organiser Edmund Jennings and Constituency PRO, Cillian Griffey.

Outgoing Constituency Secretary and former local election candidate, Cillian Griffey stated: ‘I am heartened by the attendances at branch and district AGM’s. Strong district officers have been elected and it is great to see new and young people getting involved. We need strong districts to activate our branches ahead of what will be a tough general election for Fine Gael.’

Mr. Griffey added: ‘I want to see members of Fine Gael have their say at convention time and vote on who they want to see on the Fine Gael ticket. What I want to see from our Fine Gael candidates is passion, drive and ambition in this election; we need to see our candidates stand up to the so-called ‘alternative’, the fairy-tale economics of Sinn Fein.”

“We need to be united as Fine Gael members and be a team. I set you all a challenge tonight, canvass with all our Fine Gael candidates not just one. Let’s work as a team, Let’s sell our message and Let’s win a second term in Government,” he concluded.

Fine Gael’s selection convention is not expected to take place until September 2014. Senators Conway and Mulcahy are expected to seek a nomination alongside standing TD’s Joe Carey and Pat Breen.
