The death has taken place of one of the most instrumental figures in Clare soccer.

Former Clare District Soccer League Chairman, Frank Healy from Kilmaley died on Friday following a short illness.

As a mark of respect all Clare Junior Soccer League matches fixed for tomorrow have been called off.

Mr. Healy was born in Kilmaley in 1935 and like so many Irish people at the time had to immigrate to find work in the 1950’s.

Frank began playing soccer in the Solford Amateur League in Manchester with the Rovers Return in 1959 and played with them for 10 years until he returned to his native parish of Kilmaley in 1969. There were only two people in Kilmaley playing soccer at the time so Frank had to continue his career in soccer with Lifford FC in Ennis.

After leaving Lifford, Frank played with Villa Utd for two years until such time as he there was enough interest in playing soccer in Kilmaley.

Frank got involved in setting up a new club called Kilmaley Utd in 1973. Frank was elected the clubs first Chairman and took over as the first manager of the club.

Frank was one of the founder members of the Clare Schoolboys League in 1986 and was elected the League’s first Chairman. Amongst other things, Frankie oversaw fundraising efforts on behalf of the Schoolboys league. This included getting a yearly donation of £500 per year from the Clare District Soccer League. Frank remained as Chairman of the Schoolboys League until 1990.

Frank was elected to the Clare District Soccer League as a committee member in 1975 and has been involved in one form or another to this day. In 1981, Frank was elected Registrar of the Clare District Soccer League. He remained as Registrar of the Clare District Soccer League until 1990 when he was elected Chairman. Frank remained as Chairman of the Clare District Soccer League for 11 years and under his leadership soccer in the county reached new heights. Frank also oversaw the purchase and development of the County Grounds in Doora in the 1990’s.

Mr. Healy will be laid to rest in Mount Temple Cemetery, Kilmaley, following 11am Funeral Mass on Monday in Kilmaley Church. Funeral arrangements here.
