Doonbeg Lodge & Golf Club owner and American businessman, Donald Trump has pleaded with Taoiseach Enda Kenny not to sell the Government’s 25.1% stake in Aer Lingus to IAG.

In a letter to the Taoiseach, which The Herald newspaper reports it has obtained, Mr. Trump said Ireland’s tourism industry and links to foreign direct investment would be damaged by any potential sale, and indicated that it would jeopordise his plans to further invest “many millions of dollars” in his Doonbeg hotel.

Mr. Trump also indicated that the Heathrow slots provides the country with a strategic advantage that is “immeasurable”.

“Aer Lingus, like the Irish shamrock and Guinness, is essentially Irish with a strong national identity which is very important to your country. It should not be given away to the highest bidder,” stated Mr. Trump.

Trump bought Doonbeg Lodge & Golf Club in 2014. At the time he said the facility “will soon be an unparalleled resort destination with the highest standards of luxury.”

His plans took a setback earlier this month however, when he withdrew plans submitted to Clare County Council to build a coastal erosion protection system at the luxury facility. It is understood that a “more thorough version” of the application will be submitted in the coming months.
