A County Clare-born woman is just hours away from becoming the longest living person in the history of the island of Ireland.

113 year-old Kathleen Hayes Rollins Snavely was born in 1902 at Garraun, near the East Clare village of Feakle.

The 1911 Census shows that Kathleen had two siblings, namely Lena (1) and Anna May (9). Her parents were Patrick and Ellen Hayes. The below image, obtained by The Clare Herald from The National Archives, shows her family’s Census form return

Kathleen emigrated to Syracuse, New York in 1921. She now resides in a nursing home there.

The longest living person ever born on the island of Ireland was Annie Scott (born 1883) who died in 1996, aged 113 years and 37 days. At midnight tonight, Kathleen will overtake this landmark age.

In an interview given to Irish Central in recent weeks, Kathleen recalled the advice she gave her younger brothers on the day she left Ireland for the United States: “Work hard and you be careful about drinking and grow up to be someone to be proud of.”

The County Clare native will be celebrated her landmark birthday last month with a small party in her nursing home.
