A surfer is recovering in hospital after he was winched to safety from the base a cliff in north Clare this evening.

The man was reported missing at around 7.30pm although it’s believed he hadn’t been seen since around 5.00pm.

The Doolin and Kilkee units of the Irish Coast Guard along with the Aran Islands RNLI lifeboat were requested to commence a search of the area around Aill Na Searrach just north of the Cliffs of Moher.

The man had been surfing with a pal earlier however the second man had made it ashore safely. When there was no sign of the second surfer some time later, the alarm was raised.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was not available at the time so the Irish Coast Guard crew from Sligo was requested to assist in the rescue operation.

The man was quickly located by search times but it was 9.45 before the casualty was finally airlifted to safety.

He’s been taken to University Hospital Galway where he’s being treated for mild hypothermia and minor injuries.

The operation was coordinated by the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.
