Clare Junior Soccer review and fixtures

soccer2Oliver Fitzpatrick reviews the weekend soccer action in Clare.

Prego Menswear Clare Cup Round 3
Bridge Celtic 2-4 Burren Utd
With their home pitch unavailable a young Burren side had to make the long trip to Bridgetown but came away with a good cup win. The first half was competetive with both sides creating lots of chances. Burren scored two early goals from Pat Nagle and Conor Burke, assisted by Conor Burke and Cian Flaherty respectively. Bridge exerted some pressure and replied on the half hour with a goal direct from a corner. Burren had much the better of the second half and quickly added to their lead with goals from Conor Burke after good work by Joseph McGann and Tomas Cullinan. With 15 minutes remaining Bridge scored direct from a free but they couldn’t breach the Burren defence again as Burren deservedly advanced to the quarter-finals.

Burren Utd: Conor Shannon; Cian Flaherty, Dan Carey, Barry O Grady, Cian Garrihy;Tomas Cullinan, Cathal Guerin, Pat Nagle, Ryan Burke, Conor Burke; Josepn McGann. Subs Tristan O Callaghan, Liam O Sullivan (80 mins)

St Pats 0-8 Shannon Olympic A
Four goals from Garry Higgins, 2 from Declan McDonald and one each from Ryan Kelly and Ray Quigley helped Shannon Olympic easily advance to the quarter-finals at Kilmihil on Sunday.

Prego Menswear Clare Cup Round 2
Tulla Utd A 4-0 Avenue Utd B
Tulla Utd moved into the next round of the Clare Cup after a 4-0 win over Avenue Utd B in the Cragg, Tulla today. Whilst the score line would suggest a comprehensive victory, the game was much closer than that. Tulla Utd went ahead mid way through the first half after Tulla’s left full back Paraic O’Malley scored a crucial goal. From there, up to the end of the first half, Avenue pressed for an equaliser and had a few great chances only to be denied by a combination of poor finishing and great goal keeping by the Tulla number one, Shane Collins. In the second half, Tulla re-jigged their team and a penalty converted by Tulla’s Daragh Corry put the home team in the driving seat. Avenue’s hope of a comeback was dented when one of their players was sent off for dissent. Tulla finished strongly with Brazilian ace Sebastiao da Silva netting from close range whilst Daire Hannon finished the scoring with 5 minutes to go.

Husqvarna Maloney Garden Machinery Premier Division
Ennis Town A 3-1 Hermitage A
This local derby failed to live up to the excitement of previous years encounters between these two clubs. Ennis Town looked comfortable throughout but some wasteful finishing especially in the second half kept the scoreline respectable. Ennis Town started brightly and were a goal up on 10 minutes through Aaron Fitzgerald. Ennis doubled their lead on 25 minutes when Gary Collins scored. John Maher had a great chance to make it 3 but his shot sailed over the bar. The second half was much the same as Ennis Town continued where they left off and could have added at least 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the half but for some poor finishing and some fine saves from the Hermitage keeper. On 55 minutes Hermitage looked to have come back into the game when with their only serious chance of the game they scored with a fine headed goal. However Hermitage didn’t capitalise on this and didn’t trouble Masrty Whelan in the Ennis goal for the rest of the game. Ennis Town continued wasting some good chances in front of goal before Eoin Glynn added their 3rd goal in the 80 minute. His free kick from 30 yards out surprised the Hermitage keeper as it sailed in over his head.

Ennis Town A: Marty Whelan, Ethan Considine, Eoin Keenan, Sean O Callaghan, John Maher, Adrian Walsh, Daryl Eade, Eoin Glynn, Joe Collins, Aaron Fitzgerald, Gary Collins. Subs: Shane Daly for Eade, Ritchie Neylon for Fitzgerald, Lunga Balman for Gary Collins
