BreastCheck returns to Clare

Breast check meBreastCheck, the national Breast Screening Programme is encouraging women aged 50 to 64 living in Clare to avail of a free breast mammogram (x-ray) in the BreastCheck mobile digital screening unit located in the grounds of Clare County Council in Ennis.

BreastCheck started screening in the last week and expect to remain in Ennis until December.

Welcoming the return of BreastCheck back to Co Clare, Cllr.Mary Howard said “Since BreastCheck first came to Co Clare in 2010 many lives have been saved by this simple procedure. These lives have been our mothers, sisters, aunts and cousins, however it is important to be aware that about 20 men get diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year also.”

Councillor Howard asked women to carry out regular self examinations of their breasts and encourages eligible participants to attend their appointment.

The last round of screening by Breastcheck in Clare saw approximately 7,000 women attending. It is expected that about 10,000 women will be invited in this round, including approximately 1,800 women who will be invited for the first time. Women are encouraged to contact BreastCheck if the appointment time or date does not suit, as it can easily be changed by calling: (091) 580650.
