A Clare-born woman now living in the USA has become the second longest living person in the history of the island of Ireland.
113 year-old Kathleen Hayes Rollins Snavely was born in 1902 in the East Clare village of Feakle from where she emigrated to Syracuse, New York in 1921. She now resides in a nursing home there, according to Irish American newspaper IrishCentral.
In Kathleen’s only known interview of recent years, she recalled the advice she gave her younger brothers on the day she left Ireland for the United States: “Work hard and you be careful about drinking and grow up to be someone to be proud of.”
IrishCentral reports that the County Clare native will be celebrating her landmark birthday today (Monday) with a small party in her nursing home.
The longest living person ever born on the island of Ireland was Annie Scott (born 1883) who died in 1996, aged 113 years and 37 days.
