Anthony Cunningham has named his starting fifteen to take on Clare in the opening fixture of the National Hurling League.

Youth is evident in the team named with Cunningham opting to start six members of the Galway U21 team from 2014 who lost to Wexford in the All-Ireland semi-final on a scoreline of 1-21 to 1-19. Cornerback John Hanbury, full forward Jason Flynn, corner forward Cathal Mannion along with the half-forward line of Pádraig Brehony, Jonathan Glynn and Dean Higgins all featured at the U21 grade in 2014.

After winning the Walsh Cup last weekend with a 1-22 to 1-20 win over Dublin, Anthony Cunningham have decided to make three changes from the team that won the competition. Johnny Coen, Éanna Burke and Brian Molloy drop to the bench with John Hanbury, Iarla Tannian and Cathal Mannion taking their places.

It is expected Davy Fitzgerald will not name his team until Friday evening with David Reidy speculated to get his first start under Fitzgerald. Joint Captains Patrick Donnellan and Cian Dillon are presumed to get the nod to start but question marks remain over what type of team the Sixmilebridge man will pick.

Throw in for Sunday’s tie at Pearse Stadium is 14:00 with Offaly’s Brian Gavin taking charge of proceedings.
