Go ahead for Eircodes postcode system

ericodeMinister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Minister Alex White, T.D announced today that the Government has given approval to draft legislation concerning the Eircodes postcode system, which will be introduced later this year.

Minister White said: “I will be introducing a short piece of legislation, which will underpin existing measures and commitments to ensure that the use of postcodes will be fully compliant with data protection requirements set down in legislation.”

Since the inception of the Eircodes project, there has been ongoing dialogue between the Department of Communications and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.

The Data Protection Commissioner advised that the postcode project should be underpinned by its own data protection legislation to ensure that personal data is fully protected in the implementation and licencing of the system. The Heads of Bill approved today address this.
