Emergency services were called to two incidents on the M18 early today after the motorway was left in a treacherous condition following a hail shower.

Three vehicles were involved in one collision about 7kms north of Ennis. The crash happened in the southbound lanes of the M18 between Crusheen and Barefield.

Gardaí are investigating the collision which occurred following a heavy downpour of hail that fell when temperatures were just hovering about zero.

Units of the fire brigade from Ennis and Gort responded to the incident along with gardaí and an ambulance from Ennis.

The three motorists escaped serious.

The motorway remained closed between junctions 15 and 14 for over an hour while traffic was diverted onto the old N18.

Another collision happened a short distance away on the same stretch of road however the occupants were unhurt.

The AA issued warnings in the wake of the collisions
