Two in hospital after Lough Derg incident

Two people are recovering in hospital after their kayak capsized in storm conditions on Lough Derg this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 2.30pm when the Irish Coast Guard received a report of an overturned kayak near Holy Island off Mountshannon, Co Clare.

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard along with the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter responded to the incident.

The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat, based at Dromineer on the Tipperary shore, was also alerted along with the HSE’s National Ambulance Service.

Two people managed to make it ashore at Mountshannon but were said to be exhausted and hypothermic. It’s not known how long they were in the water.

They were helped from the water by locals and cared for until emergency services arrived.

They were assessed by ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to University Hospital Limerick.

Search teams were stood down once it was confirmed there were no other persons missing.
