Conway Linked With Move Away From Fine Gael

Senator Martin Conway looks set to leave the Fine Gael party in favour of a new Independent Alliance according to national reports.

Hugh O’Connell of http://www.thejournal.ie first reported the possibility that Conway was in line to join the new alliance of Independent TD’s fronted by Shane Ross and Michael Fitzmaurice. Ross has previously stated that the alliance will “absolutely uproot politics in this country” and “change the whole face of the Dáil”.

Today it has emerged that Senator Conway may also become a member of Lucinda Creighton’s new political party which is currently going under the title of ‘Reboot Ireland’. Economist Eddie Hobbs is the most high profile individual to have teamed up with Ms Creighton as of yet.

It appears as if Martin Conway will not be given a ticket from Fine Gael to run as a candidate in the next General Election. This is the main reason why the Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson for Justice, Disability and Equality is considering a move away from his current party. Should he decide to depart, it would come as a massive blow to Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Prior to his election to the Administrative Panel of the Seanad in 2011, Martin had served on Clare County Council from 2004 to 2011. Martin has been involved with Fine Gael since attending secondary school in Ennistymon. The forty year old has been a big campaigner with various disability groups and is founder of AHEAD (The Association of Higher Education Access and Disability) which endeavours to make education accessible to all.

Sitting Clare TD’s Joe Carey and Pat Breen are almost guaranteed to get the nods from Fine Gael to run as candidates in the next General Election. Other names vying to get a nomination from the Fine Gael hierarchy along with Conway include Seanad Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and National Resources, Tony Mulcahy and County Cllr, Mary Howard.

No confirmation has been given by Senator Conway in relation to a move from Fine Gael. However, Conway expects to be a candidate in the next General Election, the question is whether or not he will be on the Fine Gael ticket or as part of an Independent Alliance under the leadership of Shane Ross or Lucinda Creighton.
