Newmarket-on-Fergus native Shane Cusack has signed for League of Ireland outfit Athlone Town.
The highly rated goalkeeper has been tied to Limerick FC since August 2010. In the season gone by, Cusack made seven league appearances providing cover for Ennis man Barry Ryan when needed. He made his Limerick debut in 2011 against Salthill Devon.
Cusack first rose to prominence lining out with Newmarket Celtic in his youth and was quickly snapped up by English outfit Colchester United at the age of sixteen. The netminder spent two seasons with Colchester before signing for Pat Scully’s Limerick FC.
The 2015 season will see, Shane Cusack line out in the First Division following Athlone Town’s relegation to the lower tier. The Eddie Wallace managed side also acquired the services of Shane’s Limerick teammate Garbhan Coughlan in a double transfer. The Town are currently in pre-season training for the 2015 campaign which will begin in March and their main objective is to return to the top flight and the signing of Cusack is certainly a move in the right direction.
Before deciding to concentrate entirely on football, Shane Cusack was a very distinguished hurler and played an instrumental role in securing the 2010 Minor Championship for Newmarket-on-Fergus playing at full-forward.
