Two women are recovering in hospital following a series of early morning crashes in poor weather conditions.

Four incidents were reported on the M18 just north of Crusheen shortly after 9.30am. The area had been blanketed in hail following a heavy downpour and resulted in four separate crashes.

One woman had a lucky escape when her van spun out of control, hit an embankment and overturned. She sustained suspected broken ribs and is being treated at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) for her injuries.

Just a few hundreds metres further north, two cars lost control and left the road at around the same time in the same area. One car smashed into the a crash barrier designed to crumple on impact while absorbing the energy from a collision.

The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics but was able to walk from her car to an ambulance.

A second car crashed out of control just 30 metres away however it came to safe stop in the ditch without it’s driver being hurt.

The occupants of a fourth vehicle escaped injury when they also skidded on the hail on the opposite side of the motorway.

Gardaí operated a rolling roadblock to slow traffic down but with temperatures hovering just about freezing and the road still in a treacherous condition, it was decided to close the northbound carriageway between Crusheen and Gort.

In December last year, emergency crews responded to a total of 12 collision in one morning in the same area and following similar weather conditions.
