€1.77m in payments for 2798 Clare farmers

COWClare Senator Tony Mulcahy has said that 2,798 Clare farmers are set to benefit from payments totalling €1,771,910 under the Beef Genomics Scheme and the Grassland Sheep Scheme.

Senator Mulcahy, who obtained figures from the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, said he welcomed the allocation of €1,674,840 to 2,354 Clare sucker farmers, as well as €97,070 to 444 Clare sheep farmers.

The Beef Genomics Scheme was introduced in 2014 and is fully funded by the National Exchequer. The Grassland Sheep Scheme, which will be discontinued in its present form in January 2015, is based on the current EU Regulation governing direct payments in the form of the Single Payment Scheme.

Senator Mulcahy confirmed payments will begin issuing to the Clare farmers concerned tomorrow (Wednesday, 10 December) and would “provide a very important and timely boost to support incomes in both the beef and sheep sectors”.
