Conway welcomes Seanad Reform working group

seanadFine Gael Clare Senator Martin Conway, has welcomed the establishment of a working group on Seanad Reform by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The Taoiseach today set up the high powered working group which will have former Senator Maurice Manning as chair.

According to Senator Conway: “Maurice is a person of impeccable integrity who I had the privilege of getting to know as a student of his in UCD. As an advocate of Seanad reform for many years, I know that Dr Manning will bring a sense of purpose & urgency to his new role.”

“The other members of this important working group will very much compliment Dr Manning with their broad experience of the workings of politics in Ireland.

“The people of Ireland voted to retain the Upper House as they believed that the Seanad plays a very important role in scrutinising legislation. They did however want to see a much more democratic and reformed Seanad and I very much welcome the new group as a significant step in achieving this,” he concluded.
